"Congratulations on your baby"
These are the words I have been hearing over and over. People passing by or in the grocery store always admire such a little tiny baby and their last words are always "congratulations". I find myself frozen in awkwardness over hearing those words and trying to think of a way to respond. "Thank you", I guess is ok, but for what, I did not birth her and those words sort of imply ownership. "She's not mine, she's a foster child", is another response and yet people are taken back by those words and the awkwardness continues. It is strange, even a little weird caring for someone else's newborn. She is sweet and she is so little and I would love to claim her but it just doesn't feel right. I can snuggle her, kiss on her soft cheeks and reassure her over and over that she is loved but there is this distance between us...she is not mine, she belongs to someone else. I often find my self wondering if that will change. I took her to a visit with her Mom yesterday and it was nice to see her Mom touch her hands so tenderly and yet so sad to take the baby from her arms 2hours later. She is a child of God and regardless of her living situation, He is taking care of her, but there is very little "congratulations" involved with this story.

Kristen,
Try to take solace in the congratulations that you have been chosen by God to care for her and meet her needs for right now. Regardless of the future there is honor in that God has chosen your family to be the one to have this baby...for now. Saying thank you can just mean for you that you recognize God trusts you to keep her best interest at heart and love her for the time being with all you are and you can say thank you for that. It does not matter what they meant by the congratulations. Thank you for God placing her with you for now bittersweet as it may be it is such an honor and blessing to care for a child of God.
You are rising to your calling and there is no reason you can't simply say thank you when people say congrats and view it as that without awkwardness.
Always in our prayers
Courtney
Congratulations on being strong enough to take care of such a precious little baby even though she is "not yours". God has chosen YOU to be this childs "go to" person for now....enjoy every minute.
Kristen and Family,
We are so amazed at the abundence of your love...straight from our Faithful Father! ;) We hope to see you soon and give you our own congratulations hug! ;)
i read this post and got major goosebumps. so well said Kristen! its good to know your heart and can't imagine the mix of emotions you experience raising a baby that initially wasn't "yours." your pictures of her are beautiful and the love you already have for her is so evident and really beautiful.
